Literary Reading & Analysis

This course is designed to help students strengthen their middle school–level skills in reading and interpreting literature. As students build confidence in comprehension and analysis, they will also create short original fiction, applying the same literary techniques and storytelling strategies they study in their reading.

Throughout the course, students will have frequent and varied opportunities to practice reading and analyzing texts, with access to over 90 short works and 32+ hands-on projects that allow them to explore and apply these skills independently.

This course is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for grades 6–8 English/Language Arts.

Public Speaking 101

With speaking skills and audio production in high demand, this course introduces students to the essentials of effective communication. Learners practice organizing speeches, using purposeful tone, and incorporating confident body language while creating a polished collection of their own recorded work.

Critical & Creative Writing

This course guides students in developing advanced middle school writing skills—both analytical and creative.

In the first part of the course, students focus on analytical and argumentative writing centered on literary texts. They will practice building strong claims and counterclaims, selecting and interpreting textual evidence, and refining their writing through revision.

In the second part of the course, students turn to creative writing, exploring fiction techniques such as creating multidimensional characters, constructing engaging conflicts, shaping effective story structure, and experimenting with point of view.

By the end of the course, students will be able to craft a well-supported analytical paragraph and compose an original, cohesive short story. Completion of (Reading course new name) (or its equivalent) is recommended before enrollment.

This course aligns with the Writing strand of the Common Core State Standards for grades 6–8 English Language Arts.
